Primidone is an anticonvulsant drug first introduced in the 1950s for the management of epilepsy. It belongs to the barbiturate class and works by suppressing abnormal electrical activity in the brain to control seizures. Initially developed as an alternative to older barbiturates, it offered a potentially better side effect profile. Primidone is effective in treating both generalized and partial seizures. Over the years, it has remained an important option for patients who do not respond well to other antiepileptic medications. Besides epilepsy, primidone is sometimes used off-label to manage essential tremor. Its long-standing clinical use has established a well-documented safety and efficacy profile.
