Fluvastatin is a cholesterol-lowering medication that belongs to the statin class of drugs and is used to reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides, helping to prevent cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. It works by inhibiting an enzyme in the liver responsible for cholesterol production and is usually prescribed along with lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. Developed in the late 1980s, fluvastatin was the first fully synthetic statin and was approved for medical use in the early 1990s under the brand name Lescol. Since its introduction, it has been recognized for its effectiveness and favorable safety profile, remaining an important treatment option, especially for patients who may not tolerate other statins well.
