Methylmagnesium Bromide

Methylmagnesium bromide (CH₃MgBr) is a highly reactive organometallic compound belonging to the Grignard reagent family. It is typically supplied as a solution in diethyl ether or tetrahydrofuran (THF). This compound acts as a strong nucleophile and base, commonly used in organic synthesis to form carbon–carbon bonds. It reacts readily with carbonyl compounds such as aldehydes, ketones, esters, and carbon dioxide to produce alcohols or carboxylic acids after acidic workup. Because it reacts violently with water and moisture, it must be handled under strictly anhydrous conditions.
