Zoledronic Acid is a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate used to treat and prevent bone-related disorders such as osteoporosis, Paget’s disease of bone, and cancer-related bone complications like hypercalcemia of malignancy and skeletal metastases by inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. It was developed in the 1990s as part of research into more potent bisphosphonates with longer duration of action, building on earlier compounds used for bone disease management; it was later approved for medical use in many countries in the early 2000s and became widely used due to its high potency and convenient intravenous dosing regimen.
