Safinamide is a selective and reversible monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) inhibitor used as an add-on therapy for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, particularly in patients experiencing motor fluctuations. It enhances dopaminergic activity in the brain and also modulates glutamate release, helping to improve motor symptoms and quality of life. Safinamide was originally discovered and developed by Newron Pharmaceuticals in the 1990s. After extensive clinical evaluation demonstrating its efficacy and safety, it received approval in the European Union in 2015 and later in the United States in 2017. Today, Safinamide is an important adjunct treatment option for managing Parkinson’s disease symptoms.
