Quinapril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor commonly prescribed for the treatment of hypertension and heart failure. By inhibiting ACE, quinapril prevents the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor, which results in vasodilation, reduced blood pressure, and decreased strain on the heart. It also lowers aldosterone secretion, helping to reduce sodium and water retention, and provides protective effects on the kidneys, particularly in patients with diabetes or chronic kidney disease. Quinapril is administered orally, usually once or twice daily, and is often part of a combination therapy with diuretics or other antihypertensive agents. While generally well tolerated, common side effects include persistent dry cough, dizziness, hypotension, and elevated blood potassium levels, with rare risks of angioedema or kidney dysfunction. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolytes is recommended during long-term therapy.
