Progesterone is a natural steroid hormone essential for regulating the menstrual cycle, preparing the uterus for implantation, and maintaining pregnancy, produced mainly by the ovarian corpus luteum and later by the placenta. Its history began in the early 20th century with the discovery of ovarian hormones, and in 1934 Willard Allen and George Corner successfully isolated and named progesterone, leading to its synthesis in the 1940s and its subsequent use in hormonal therapies, reproductive medicine, and the development of modern contraceptive research.
