Nitrendipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker introduced in the late 1970s and clinically adopted in the 1980s for the treatment of hypertension and certain cardiovascular conditions. Developed as part of efforts to create safer and more effective vasodilators, it works by inhibiting L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle, leading to reduced vascular resistance and improved blood pressure control. Over time, nitrendipine became known for its long-acting antihypertensive effects, good tolerability, and usefulness in patients requiring sustained blood pressure reduction.
