Febantel is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic used mainly in veterinary medicine, especially for the treatment and control of gastrointestinal parasites in dogs. It belongs to the pro-benzimidazole group and acts as a precursor that is metabolized in the animal’s body into active compounds such as fenbendazole and oxfendazole, which disrupt the parasite’s energy metabolism and lead to its death. Developed in the 1970s to improve the safety and effectiveness of benzimidazole drugs, febantel gained importance due to its good tolerability and wide activity against roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and some tapeworms. Over the years, it has been commonly used in combination formulations with other anthelmintics, making it a reliable and widely accepted agent in veterinary parasite control.
