Hypokalaemia is a medical condition in which the potassium level in the bloodstream is too low. Potassium is essential for proper muscle function, nerve activity, and maintaining a regular heartbeat. A drop in potassium can lead to symptoms like tiredness, muscle cramps, weakness, and, in more serious cases, dangerous heart rhythm disturbances. The condition often arises from potassium loss, which can occur due to prolonged vomiting or diarrhea, the use of certain medications like diuretics, or medical conditions affecting the kidneys. It may also occur when potassium shifts from the blood into the body’s cells, such as during insulin treatment or metabolic alkalosis. Managing hypokalaemia involves treating the underlying issue and restoring potassium levels, usually through diet, supplements, or intravenous fluids if the deficiency is severe.
